Botox performed by NYC Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr. Sobel, is a simple and safe procedure that takes only a few minutes and requires no recovery time. Individuals with peripheral motor neuropathic diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or neuromuscular junction disorders (eg, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome) should be monitored when given Patients with neuromuscular disorders may be at increased risk of clinically significant effects including generalized muscle weakness, diplopia, ptosis, dysphonia, dysarthria, severe dysphagia, and respiratory compromise from therapeutic doses of BOTOX® (see Warnings and Precautions).

Therapeutic use of botulinum toxin type A or B during pregnancy should be reserved for appropriate indications where no suitable alternative for treatment is available. The use of botulinum toxin for cosmetic indications during pregnancy should be avoided. Inadvertent exposure to botulinum toxin type A or B would not usually be regarded as medical grounds for any additional fetal monitoring. However, other risk factors may be present in individual cases which may independently increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome. Clinicians are reminded of the importance of consideration of such factors when performing case-specific risk assessments.

Patient groups quickly spread the word that there were now effective treatments for previously untreatable motility disorders such as blepharospasm , which can result in functional blindness despite an otherwise normal visual system. Torticollis patients discovered that their pain could be markedly reduced by toxin injection, motility increased, head position somewhat improved, even if tremor was not. In 1993, Scott, Pankaj Pasricha, and colleagues showed that botulinum toxin could be used for the treatment of achalasia , a spasm of the lower esophageal sphincter. 44 Spasmodic dysphonia (difficulty speaking), various gastroenteric and urinary sphincter spasms, muscle spasm in stroke, and many other muscle disorders, were also treated with botulinum toxin injection.botulinum toxin type a

The muscles contributing to formation of frown lines are the glabellar complex depressor muscles, which include the corrugator supercilii, procerus, and depressor supercilii. Contraction of these muscles pulls the brows medially and inferiorly ( Figure 3 15 ).
